It has and it hasn't been a great reading week. While I have read a lot, I have only finished one book this week. I guess I am comparing myself to the other weeks in which I have usually have had 2 or more book reviews up, especially lately. And that partly has to do with the fact that I have been trying to finish Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman and seems to have zapped any sort of reading will out of me. I will and have read great portions out of the ebook, but it seems that any time I finish with reading it, I don't want to read anything else. I think part of the reason is that the book is so dense that one can't just plow through the book like they would with a novel.
Its not that I don't like it, I do, but it just seems that when I am finished with a section, I can't read anything else. Its like I have to will myself to read something else because it zaps so much energy out of me.
That being said, has anybody else experienced that feeling that after reading a portion of a book, you can't read anything else because either you are so focused on the book or its just so dense with facts and information that you can't really read anything else?

I don't think you should feel guilty, Melissa. That book, from what I saw and from what you're describing, is quite an undertaking in itself. I haven't read that kind of book in a while, although I think one that compares is The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer. I remember reading that as a teen and I couldn't focus on anything else. It was great, but daunting. However, in the end, I didn't regret reading it...just as I'm sure you won't regret reading this one.
Absolutely. I felt that way with
1Q84. I knew it was due back at the library and that there was a long waiting list for it, so I knew I had to get through it rather quickly. It, too, left me with no energy to read anything else.
When reading some books, I do feel like I'm slogging through dense mud...even when I like them.
Some of the authors I normally enjoy are like that, eg. Doris Lessing.
It just takes a lot of concentration and effort, and sometimes I don't feel like giving that much.
Hence, I try to mix lighter books in with the heavy ones.
Good luck!
Here's MY SUNDAY SALON POST
@UnfinishedPerson I am not regretting reading the book, its just that its taking such a long time to finish and part of the problem is my ereader, which doesn't read well in outside light.
@DebNance I can see that. I suppose part of the problem is that I have had several like that in a row and this one has left me feeling ugh at the moment.
@Laurel-Rain Snow I am trying to do that, but with book due back in about 3 days, I need to get done or its not accessible to me anymore; its not like I can rack up the fines on the book like I can with a conventional book. I am reading lighter material, but it just seems like this is taking up most, if not all of my reading energy.
I would feel great if I could get through a book a week! And I completely agree about getting bogged down in certain books and in their aftermath.
